She had written the book when she was in high school. The book was published in 1967.
The Outsiders was the first book that Hinton had ever written and published. She had written it because she did not like the novels that were titled for young adults, so she had decided to make one of her own. When her husband had fallen critically ill, she was constantly depressed. During that time, it influenced Hinton to write another book called That was Then, This is Now. Her husband had persuaded her to write at least two pages a day to approve her works in her career and it resulted to the making of that book. It is said that that book is a tad more well-thought out than her first book. She had been on a three year writing block due to the great publicity and pressure of the crowd after writing her first ever book. Hinton had written her first book when she was only seventeen. She was attending Will Rogers High School at the time. She had began writing the draft when she was only fifteen years of age. Because of the success of her first novel, she got into a great college.
S.E. Hinton is still living with us today at the current age of sixty-five. She lives with her husband and son. They are currently living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She loves horseback riding and owns a dog. She states that she is a very private person. She comments that she reads constantly. Her son, Nick, is going off to college, soon.

Ponyboy’s World
1.) Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped. 2.) When you grow up in a tight-knit neighborhood like ours you get to know each other really well. 3.) Organize gangs are rarities- there are just small bunches of friends who stick together. 4.) They were the only kind of girls that would look at us, I thought. Tough, loud girls who wore too much eye makeup and giggled and swore too much. 5.) Two-Bit- he doesn’t really want or need half the things he swipes from stores. He thinks it’s fun to swipe everything that isn’t nailed down. 6.) Sodapop and Steve get into drag races and fights so much- both of them have too much energy, tomuch feeling, with no way to blow it off. |
My World
1.) I can walk anywhere I want safely and care-free because I know that I will not get jumped. 2.) At school, I get to know people very well. 3.) Everyone I know have their own groups that we likee to stay in and try to avoid others. 4.) Only specific types of people are thought to be in our kind of group. 5.) I do not steal just for the sake of stealing, as a matter of fact, I could not steal because I would be afraid of the consequences that I may encounter. 6.) I never get into drag races nor fights; however, I have enough energy. |
